Who Can Join the Underground Derby League?

The Underground Derby League is open to women of all skating abilties from complete beginners to seasoned skaters. We take our motto of "No woman left behind" seriously and aim to teach our crazy sport to anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort to learn.

Our regular practices are open to women over 18 who have passed our league's skill test. Young women between 12 and 17 are welcome to join our Junior Derby team, known as the Jailbreak Juniors .

Beginning Skaters and Skills Testing

Our beginners classes occur on Saturdays at 10 am at Skateland (2725 12th Ave NE Olympia, WA 98506). Those wishing to join UDL should first attend our Saturday morning sessions. Skills testing occurs at these sessions on an as-needed basis to determine which skaters are ready to move to senior level practices.

At our beginning classes, we will teach you the basics of skating that will make it possible for you to begin playing roller derby. This will include:

• Basic skating skills such as stops, falls, derby form, blocking and more
• Drills to improve footwork, endurance, speed and strength, blocking and jamming

What do I need?

Come dressed in comfortable clothing (something you might wear to work out in). We have a borrow bag of protective equipment and available for those who are attending their first few beginners classes. Loaner skates are available from Skateland during the beginners practices.

All skaters will need eventually need to possess the following gear:
• Quad roller skates
• Helmet
• Kneepads
• Elbow pads
• Wrist guards
• Mouthguard

How much does it cost?

The Underground Derby League does not charge a membership fee. We pay for our rink time through ticket sales (often club members are required to sell a certain minimum of tickets) and through fundraising activities. Skaters are responsible for the costs of their personal skating equipment and clothing (with the exception of some specific items for a team uniform).

What about skaters who are not beginniners?

Skaters who have passed our league's minimum skills test practice two to three times a week at Skateland. Most practices occur at 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 7:00 pm on Sundays.

At these practices, skaters continue to improve on their skating skills, learn roller derby strategy, learn advancing skills such as effective hitting and turning, and participate in scrimmage matches against members of other intraleague teams.

Jailbreak Juniors

Practices for our juniors team occurs at 10:00 am on Saturdays during our beginners class and 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, which runs concurrently with the practice of our senior squard.

At these practices, skaters continue to improve on their skating skills, learn roller derby strategy, and participate in scrimmage matches against other juniors. (Juniors may not participate in contact scrimmages with the senior squad.)

Drunk Spice wants you to know that hitting practice is great fun!
