KNOW RULES! #48
Position: Referee

Inspiration for my name/number: I wanted a Native American derby name. My best friend, who is Indian, came up with the name Bad Medicine. It was perfect! My number comes from being a NASCAR fan; #48 is Jimmy Johnson.

Hometown: I was born in the hospital in McCleary, Washington but I have been raised and still live in Olympia.

Joined UDL: I was one of the first 14 members of Underground Derby League. Our first practice was in August 2009.

Why I Joined: My first roller derby debut was with the Oly Rollers. I played with them for a year and a half but just couldn't fully commit to the level of competitiveness they play. I belong to American Made Rodeo Drill Team and we are a highly competitive team; it was too much to try to commit myself to both the Oly Rollers and my drill team. I highly respect the Oly Rollers and I am so grateful for the time I skated with them. UDL was formed at a perfect time in my life. I wanted to play roller derby without a huge commitment. I found that I was enjoying myself so much, I didn't miss any practices. The girls who formed UDL bonded instantly. After just the first couple of months, the league started growing by leaps and bounds!!! It was so amazing to be a part of the inception of this league and to still be a part of what it is today. I love watching all the girls grow physically and mentally from this sport. It is a great outlet from the harsh realities of life and gives women a place to work out their daily frustrations. I have made life-long friends in this league and also have a derby wife and a derby daughter! I love all my derby bitches!

Likes: Helping other people, laughing, trail skating, anything to do with horses, riding quads, camping, sitting around the bonfire with family & good friends, spending time with my derby girls and reading a good book.

Dislikes: Liars, cheaters, people who judge other people and pickles!

KNOW RULES! #8
Position: Head Referee

Inspiration for my name/number: chose my name is because it's the way I live... I think one Should know the rules of society...but I believe in living instinctively...the way I ref. The number eight is infinite when turned on its side...just like me! It was also the number I wore as the Quarterback of my women's flag football team for eight years so it just fits.

Hometown: Steven's Point, Wisconsin

Joined UDL: August 2010

Why I Joined: I started Derby six years ago...I was the first Captain of the Oly Rollers in their inaugural bout against Lava City, OR. After several serious injuries I decided to see if I could sustain my love for skating as a Ref...and I have been reffing for the last two years whenever I can. I joined U.D.L. because I wanted to be a part of the grass roots movement to empower women as models of strength and passion. I wanted to be a part of a league that encourages all members, not just the best and most privileged. I am inspired by Dani, Desi, and Shelly...and all the gals that give their blood, sweat and tears to Skateland.

Likes: ukelele music, good poetry, nature, animals, watermellon!, skating and cool people. I love the Derby and I think it's one of the best things I have done in my life...and I have done A LOT of things.

Dislikes: I do not enjoy negativity or DRAMA! I am also not fond of jerks.

Anything else? One last thing about me...I am as old as some dirt!

Scools U. #23
Position: Referee

Inspiration for my name/number: Number is 23 because that's been my sports number since I was in middle school (it's also my b-day)! Gonzo (Know Rules) came up with my name because I'm a teacher and I can School You!

Hometown: Holmdel, NJ (yes, New Jersey). I've lived in Seattle and Olympia for almost 20 years now.

Joined UDL: I joined UDL about a year ago after playing and refereeing for Oly Rollers for about four years.

Why I Joined: I joined UDL after taking a break from roller derby. As many of you know, once you take a "break" from derby you either miss it like crazy or it wasn't really meant for you in the first place. Well, I missed it like crazy, but wanted a cool, friendly, "let's have fun" league. UDL fit that bill perfectly!

Likes: I like to ride my bike, ride horses, hike with my dogs, swim, skate (of course!), and hang out with my partner and two sons. I also like to eat, laugh, play, and experience new adventures.

Dislikes: I dislike mean people, being stuck indoors, and liver (uggghhh). I also dislike being told I have to do something because "you just have to" or "because I said so," too much like being a little kid again.

What would derby be without refs? CHAOS! The referees are our enforcers - they don't just keep track of the score, they put the smack down on people breaking the rules, bringing a little bit of order to this crazy sport!
